Dell'Oro Group reported that worldwide telecom capital expenditure rose by about 5% year over year in the first half of 2026, following several years of declining investment. The firm said this reflected a stronger start to the year and an improvement compared with expectations at the beginning of 2026.
As telecom equipment trends tracked capital spending, aggregate manufacturer revenues across six telecom equipment programs increased by approximately 5% year over year in 1H26. The report described a longer-term capex outlook that remained muted, with the forecast characterized as reflecting a more mature investment environment after prior 5G and fiber coverage cycles.
The forecast in the September 2026 Telecom Capex report projected worldwide telecom capex to grow at a 0 to 1 percent CAGR between 2025 and 2030. It also projected capital intensity, which peaked at 18% in 2022, to decline to around 14% in 2028, before increasing modestly as early 6G investment emerges. Telecom equipment revenues were projected to grow at a 2 to 3 percent CAGR between 2025 and 2030.
In the report, Dell'Oro Group stated it covers more than 50 telecom operators and provides carrier revenue, capital expenditure, and capital intensity trends. It said the report includes actual and 5-year forecast details by carrier, region, country (United States, Canada, China, India, Japan, and South Korea), and technology (wireless and wireline), and that purchase inquiries could be made via email at [email protected].
“The first half was stronger than we expected, but the improving near-term trajectory does not materially change the longer-term capex story,” said Stefan Pongratz, Vice President at Dell'Oro Group. “Operators are in a stronger capacity position following the 5G and fiber investment cycles, and the focus is gradually shifting from coverage toward capacity, modernization, automation, and efficiency. At the same time, improving operator revenues are helping to reduce capital intensity ratios even as network investments remain flat.”
