Daily Intelligence Brief: Nokia unveils high-capacity shelves and 5G growth forecast for MEA - October 13, 2025

Nokia launched high-capacity shelves for its 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS), addressing bandwidth demands. The shelves improve existing deployments, allowing cost-effective network scaling for operators.

The shelves increase density threefold and lower power consumption per bit by up to 60%. They integrate seamlessly with current systems and support advanced coherent optical engines. Customer trials are set for late 2025, with commercial availability anticipated in Q2 2026.

Nokia's Mobile Broadband Index Report projects that by 2030, 5G subscriptions in the Middle East and Africa will reach 605 million, comprising 25% of mobile connections. The report indicates that 82% of connections will be on 4G or 5G networks, facilitating Internet of Things (IoT) initiatives, smart cities, and enterprise solutions.

Growth in Fixed Wireless Access (Fixed-Wireless Access (FWA)) is expected, with market share rising from 15% in 2023 to 35% by 2030, driven by enhanced 5G infrastructure. Investments in 5G technology are instrumental in advancing various applications, including transportation and healthcare, according to Mikko Lavanti of Nokia.
