Collins Aerospace, a business of RTX, launched the Tower MicroELITE surveillance solution, a digital display system for air traffic controllers. San Bernardino Airport (SBD) became the first facility to deploy it as airspace operations increased rapidly.
San Bernardino Airport operates as a federal contract tower. Privately operated and contract airports continue to report rising traffic levels while lacking certified radar displays, which underscores the need for modern and reliable surveillance solutions.
The TME system is built on the FAA-certified Standard Terminal Automation Replacement System, or STARS, from Collins. Controllers use a familiar, industry-standard interface to monitor and manage complex aircraft sequencing. The system uses commercial off-the-shelf hardware and can be deployed at airports of any size, including regional and general aviation reliever airports, business aviation terminals and heliports.
TME has received FAA System Design Approval as an Airborne Position Reference Tool, which makes it available for deployment at eligible FAA Contract Tower airports and privately operated air traffic control facilities. The solution supports Collins' broader airspace modernization effort by connecting controllers with timely surveillance data and proven automation tools for increasingly complex operating environments.
“As air traffic continues to grow, airports need solutions that give controllers a clear and reliable view of what's happening in their airspace,” said Nicole White, vice president and general manager of Connected Aviation at Collins Aerospace. “Tower MicroELITE delivers that clarity with an FAA-approved solution that's easy to integrate and scalable so operators can manage traffic demands with confidence.”
