FTAS 4.0 expands the Fabric Test Automation Suite with 170 additional test cases, bringing the total to 646. The update focuses on validating production network scenarios at scale, including port breakout, BGP, ARP, VXLAN, ACLs, and telemetry.
Research Overview
The release adds 64 test cases to SONiC CLI coverage and 106 to FMCLI coverage. FMCLI now includes 134 test cases, up from 28, making it the largest growth area in this version.
The suite is described as reflecting customer production networks and covering scale, resiliency, and day-2 operations. The release also adds live monitoring and automated diagnostic collection for test runs.
Key Findings
Dynamic port breakout coverage now spans 800G, 400G, 200G, and 100G configurations. The tests are intended to validate breakout changes before they are applied in production.
The suite also extends BGP validation with link flap, burst flap, and rapid flap tests at 32K, 64K, and 128K scale. Additional coverage includes 2K ARP entries and ECMP-based route scaling up to 64K routes.
Technical Breakdown
New L3VNI and L2VNI scale automation covers as many as 4,094 VLANs. These tests check ARP and FDB aging, forced clears, traffic recovery, and fabric behavior during spine or uplink failures.
FTAS 4.0 also adds ACL scale validation and config update CLI coverage. The new tests include table-scoped ACL updates, malformed input handling, sequential switchovers, IPv6 and L3V6 table paths, and traffic permission checks during active switchovers.
Operational Impact
SNMPv3 validation now includes interface, LLDP, entity, IP, VLAN, loopback, and management VRF walks. The blog says this is intended to give monitoring teams more confidence in switch telemetry.
The release also extends RFC 2544 frame-size validation and adds targeted VXLAN tests for ARP flush and IP update behavior when a MAC address is reused. Techsupport dumps are now collected automatically before cleanup, and test progress can be tracked in the UI while runs are in progress.
FTAS 4.0 is a fact-based summary of the vendor blog and presents the update as a broader extension of test coverage for network validation, diagnostics, and operational monitoring. For enterprise teams, the release centers on automation for production-like network scenarios and tooling for test visibility and failure analysis.
