Renesas launches R-BMS F battery management solutions with pre-validated firmware

Renesas Electronics Corporation has introduced all-in-one solutions for managing lithium-ion battery packs aimed at various battery-powered consumer products, including e-bikes and drones. The new R-BMS F (Ready Battery Management System with Fixed Firmware) is designed to reduce the learning curve for developers, allowing for rapid design of power-efficient battery management systems.

The R-BMS F solutions encompass Renesas’ fuel gauge industrial control systems (ICS), an integrated microcontroller (MCU), pre-validated firmware, and comprehensive documentation, all packaged in evaluation kits ready for shipment.

Renesas will demonstrate the new battery management solutions at the Applied Power Electronics Conference (APEC) in Atlanta, Georgia, from March 16-20.

The firm notes that firmware is crucial for battery management systems, as it monitors various states like state of charge (SoC) and state of health (SoH) of the batteries. Renesas' solutions offer built-in, pre-tested firmware aimed at optimizing battery life and ensuring safe operation, with features such as cell balancing and temperature monitoring. Developers can adjust system parameters for different battery chemistries through a graphical user interface, minimizing the need for extensive programming expertise.

Chris Allexandre, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Power at Renesas, stated that the complexity of firmware development often hinders efficient power management design. The R-BMS F systems provide a simplified path to market-ready solutions without requiring deep knowledge of Modular Cooling Unit (MCU) programming.

The complete evaluation kits come with essential hardware and software tools required for development, including a battery front end and a low-power MCU. These kits aim to support developers in creating efficient power management systems that monitor battery usage effectively.

Both the 2-4 cell series and 3-10 cell series R-BMS F solutions are available to customers now. More details about these products can be found on Renesas' website.
