OpenAI partners with G42 to build AI data center in Abu Dhabi

OpenAI partnered with G42, a United Arab Emirates firm, to develop an extensive Artificial Intelligence (AI) data center in Abu Dhabi. This project marks OpenAI's first substantial venture outside the U.S., showcasing an anticipated capacity of 1 gigawatt (1 GW), among the largest globally. The specific costs associated with this data center were not disclosed; similar U.S. projects typically exceed $10 billion. The initiative, named Stargate UAE, aligns with the UAE's strategy to establish itself as a significant supporter of AI enterprises and infrastructure. G42, overseen by Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed al Nahyan, leads this effort. A key feature of this project includes offering an enhanced version of ChatGPT to residents at no cost, as announced by OpenAI. The initial 200 megawatts of capacity is projected to be completed by the end of 2026. Funding for construction will be provided by G42, while the operational aspects will involve OpenAI and Oracle. Other collaborators include NVIDIA and Cisco, both recognized in the technology and AI sectors. This project follows recent agreements between the UAE and the Trump administration aimed at expanding AI capabilities through increased access to AI chip imports.
