AMD Develops Lux and Discovery Supercomputers for U.S. AI Advancement

Automated Model Deployment (AMD) announced its collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to develop two advanced supercomputers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL): the Lux Artificial Intelligence (AI) supercomputer and the Discovery supercomputer. The Lux system will be the first dedicated AI factory in the U.S. for scientific purposes and is set for deployment in early 2026. Together, these systems aim to enhance U.S. leadership in AI and High performance computing (HPC).

Both supercomputers are designed to align with the U.S. AI Action Plan by fostering AI-enabled scientific innovation and strengthening national competitiveness. The planned $1 billion investment will integrate contributions from both the private and public sectors, aiming to build secure and efficient infrastructures for AI and scientific research.

The Lux AI supercomputer will utilize AMD’s latest EPYC CPUs and Instinct MI355X GPUs, while the Discovery supercomputer will enhance existing DOE efforts with next-generation AMD architecture tailored for sovereign AI. In 2028, Discovery will join Lux in supporting a range of research fields, from energy to national security.
