AMD and DOE partner for AI supercomputers lux and discovery

AMD and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced plans for two supercomputers, Lux and Discovery, intended to strengthen America's position in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and High performance computing (HPC). Lux is set to be operational in early 2026, while Discovery will follow in 2028. The combined investment of $1 billion from both private and public sources aims to enhance scientific research and bolster national security.

Located at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), the Lux AI supercomputer will serve as the first dedicated U.S. AI factory, specifically built to support scientific advancements and foster innovation across multiple fields including energy, medicine, and advanced manufacturing. The Discovery supercomputer, which features next-generation AMD technology, is poised to facilitate U.S. leadership in both AI and HPC.

Lisa Su, AMD's president and CEO, emphasized the importance of public-private partnerships in advancing critical research priorities. Both supercomputers will address pressing challenges faced by national researchers, agencies, and innovators by providing the necessary computing power for AI-driven scientific exploration and development.

ORNL is expected to significantly benefit from the deployment of Lux and Discovery, as they will improve speed and efficiency in addressing complex scientific problems, thus reinforcing the United States' competitive edge in the global landscape.
