Sysdig report highlights rise of machine identities in security challenges

Cloud defenders are gaining traction as organizations increasingly operate without risky human users, according to Sysdig's “2025 Cloud-Native Security and Usage Report.” The report details measurable advancements in identity and vulnerability management, as well as improvements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) security and threat detection capabilities.

Organizations across various regions are focusing on security as they adopt more AI solutions. This includes a fivefold increase in AI workloads over the past year, although the public exposure of these workloads has dropped by 38%. Threat detection and response times are improving, with mature teams detecting threats in under five seconds and initiating responses in approximately 3.5 minutes.

Despite progress, the report identified that machine identities now outnumber human identities by a factor of 40,000, introducing significant vulnerabilities. As the lifecycle of containers shortens and images grow larger, organizations are urged to prioritize effective threat detection and response to secure their cloud environments accurately.

“Cybersecurity has long been an arms race between threat actors and defenders, but the battlefield is evolving,” said Crystal Morin, Sysdig Cybersecurity Strategist. She noted that while the advancements in detection are promising, the rapid escalation of machine identities necessitates continued vigilance and rapid response capabilities to maintain security.

The report serves as a resource for organizations to understand the changing cloud security landscape and adapt their strategies accordingly.
