Nokia to Supply AirScale 5G RAN to Virgin Media O2

Nokia said it was selected by Virgin Media O2 for a multi-year 5G Radio Access Network (RAN) deployment and modernization program across the UK. The companies said the work is meant to support Virgin Media O2’s Mobile Transformation Plan as the network rollout continues.

Nokia will supply the latest-generation AirScale RAN portfolio for the program. The PR states that the deployment is intended to improve capacity, coverage, spectral efficiency, and throughput, with the goal of improving customer-experienced speeds. It also describes the rollout as a foundation for 5G-Advanced capabilities.

Under the deal, Nokia’s AirScale RAN offering includes ultra-capacity modular baseband and energy-efficient, future-proofed Massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) radios. The PR also mentions optimized spectrum utilization and enhanced energy-saving software features, alongside Nokia’s GigaSite architecture, Dual-Band Massive MIMO, and AI-enabled baseband platforms.

Nokia and Virgin Media O2 will expand collaboration on joint innovation programs that include pilots and proofs of concept. The PR says these efforts will focus on network automation, AI-driven intelligence, and energy-efficient architectures aligned with Virgin Media O2’s Mobile Transformation Plan. “We are delighted to deepen our longstanding partnership with Virgin Media O2 through this important new 5G RAN deal. Our AirScale portfolio is designed to deliver the performance, efficiency, and flexibility required for the UK’s future connectivity needs. We look forward to supporting Virgin Media O2 in building one of the most advanced and reliable 5G Advanced networks in the country,” said Mark Atkinson, Head of RAN at Nokia. “As we continue to evolve and enhance our award‑winning mobile network with our Mobile Transformation Plan, Nokia remains a key strategic partner in helping us deliver reliable connectivity to our customers. This new agreement allows us to accelerate our 5G rollout, improve performance, and ensure we meet growing demand for high‑quality mobile services both today and in the future,” said Jeanie York, Chief Technology Officer, Virgin Media O2. The organizations framed the agreement as extending Nokia’s role as a primary RAN partner for Virgin Media O2 after a previously announced arrangement to continue 5G rollout and modernization.
