Nokia and LMT form agreement for Baltic defense solution
Nokia and Latvijas Mobilais Telefons (Latency Measurement Tool (LMT)) announced a strategic agreement to develop a 5G tactical communications solution for the defense sector in the Baltics. This collaboration aims to enhance secure connectivity for military operations tailored to specific regional needs.
The partnership combines Nokia’s 5G radio technology with Latency Measurement Tool (LMT)’s defense expertise to create a resilient communications system. It focuses on supporting real-time data exchange among unmanned vehicles, sensors, and military personnel, facilitating improved situational awareness and operational interoperability.
Juris Binde, President of LMT, highlighted the importance of this partnership, stating it enhances “security, resilience, and operational readiness of national and allied forces.” Giuseppe Targia of Nokia emphasized that leveraging 5G capabilities will aid in modernizing military functions by enabling faster decision-making and seamless communication in tactical environments.
LMT has collaborated with Nokia in developing 5G-based military applications and operates Europe’s first 5G military testbed at the Ādaži base, a site associated with NATO. This new initiative aims to further strengthen defense capabilities along the eastern flank of NATO.
