Linux Foundation report shows organizations prioritize upskilling and open source for AI demands

Data indicates that 94% of organizations expect Artificial Intelligence (AI) to contribute value to operations. In a report released by the Linux Foundation, AI's growing influence on tech roles and the necessity for workforce preparedness are highlighted. The findings stem from insights gathered from over 500 global hiring and training leaders.

Clyde Seepersad, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Linux Foundation Education, noted, “Organizations are realizing that moving from pilot programs to widespread AI success depends not on access to tools but on having a workforce equipped to use them effectively.” He emphasized that training and hands-on experience are crucial components for organizations aiming to implement AI successfully.

While organizations anticipate the benefits of AI, fewer than half possess the essential AI skills required to adapt. The report revealed that 68% lack AI/ML skilled employees, impacting operational potential. Additionally, 44% of respondents identified the skilled worker shortage as a significant barrier to technology adoption. Despite these challenges, half of the organizations surveyed are expanding their AI workforce with roles such as AI/ML operations engineering leads and AI product managers.

With AI integration accelerating, organizations face heightened expectations for return on investment and new skill requirements. Frank Nagle, Advising Chief Economist of the Linux Foundation, remarked, “The AI revolution is not just a technology acquisition race but a catalyst for human capital transformation.” This necessitates building AI capabilities within existing teams.

Two-thirds of organizations reported that AI has transformed team workflows, leading to increased demands for technical validation of AI outputs. To address these changes, 72% prioritize upskilling their staff, a notable rise from 48% in 2024. Upskilling is deemed more efficient than hiring, with technical training greatly enhancing employee retention.

Open source practices play a role in facilitating AI adoption, with 40% leveraging open source frameworks and tools. Many organizations witness improved employee retention when fostering an open source culture, supporting the notion that collaboration is vital for developing AI capabilities.
