Highlights of 2025 Broadband Nation Expo: Comcast, T-Mobile keynotes + selected quotes

Over 100 ISPs from across the U.S., along with vendors in the broadband ecosystem, convened in Orlando, Florida, from November 17-19 for the TIA’s annual Broadband Nation Expo. Participants discussed the challenges associated with delivering broadband services in today’s environment. Keynote speakers covered topics such as Comcast’s advancements in 10G network technologies, T-Mobile’s fixed wireless access strategy, AT&T’s fiber expansion, and Google’s implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Data Center Operations (DCO).

I. Elad Nafshi, Comcast’s Executive Vice President and Chief Network Officer, highlighted strategies for transforming broadband networks during Healthcare Information System (HIS) keynote address. Homomorphic Encryption (HE) emphasized the need for future-proofing networks to handle demands from emerging technologies like AI and advanced streaming. Other key points included Comcast’s progress in delivering multigigabit speeds using 10G technology, their focus on network resilience, and innovations in network management.

Nafshi stated that Comcast is deploying AI technologies to enhance network reliability and customer experience. This includes utilizing AI for automation, performance optimization, and cybersecurity. By integrating AI with a robust fiber backbone, Comcast aims to create a more reliable and intelligent connectivity experience.

T-Mobile Chief Broadband Officer Allan Samson reported on the company’s growth in the fixed wireless access (FWA) market, noting that 70% of activations are occurring in urban areas. HE cited improvements in service quality as a driver for this trend, with average Fixed-Wireless Access (FWA) download speeds reaching 239 Mbps. T-Mobile also migrated all fixed wireless customers to a Standalone (SA) 5G Core Network (5GC), indicating further potential for service enhancement.

Samson acknowledged T-Mobile’s limitations in fiber optics and discussed the company’s acquisitions of Lumos and Metronet as a strategic move to strengthen their network capabilities. HE anticipated closing 2025 with over 3 million homes passed and substantial customer growth in fiber services, capitalizing on their marketing strengths to enhance sales.

Selected industry insights shared at the expo included discussions on the necessity for trustworthy networks and the importance of adaptive technologies to address rising operational costs. Speakers from various organizations stressed the need for smarter networks that leverage AI advancements for improved efficiency.
