Viasat Amara Offers Next-Generation In-Flight Connectivity Solutions for Airlines
Viasat simultaneously introduces Amara-compatible, proprietary electronically steered antenna (ESA) terminal, Viasat Aera.
Viasat, Inc. has unveiled its next-generation in-flight connectivity solution, Viasat Amara, aimed at commercial aviation. This solution incorporates advancements in satellite network design, hardware, and digital products, aiming to provide airlines with tools to enhance the passenger experience and differentiate their offerings in a competitive market.
“Viasat Amara goes far beyond fast and free high-speed Wi-Fi,” said Don Buchman, senior VP & GM, Global Commercial Aviation, Viasat. “It’s designed to meet the unique needs of each airline and every individual user in real-time across a smart multi-orbit network.”
Viasat Amara combines proven technology with a roadmap that integrates multi-network and multi-orbit systems while ensuring Quality of Service (QoS). The solution supports flexible business models and digital products tailored for airlines.
Next-generation hardware innovation, Viasat Aera
The solution builds on technology used in over 3,000 existing aircraft, optimizing connectivity through a software upgrade without the need for additional hardware.
Additionally, Viasat has announced the development of a proprietary electronically steered antenna terminal, Viasat Aera. The terminal will facilitate simultaneous, dual-beam connections across various satellite types, enabling enhanced in-flight connectivity with a single antenna.
The Viasat Aera is anticipated to be available in 2028, with an installation process designed to take less than a day and re-use existing antenna attach points.
Unique passenger experiences, powered by multi-orbit
Viasat Amara aims to leverage capabilities across geostationary (GEO), high-elliptical (HEO), and Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites. This compatibility includes capacity from Telesat Lightspeed, enhancing global coverage and connectivity as airline demands evolve.
“Viasat Amara will help our airline customers achieve their ambitions – creating competitive advantage and enhancing passenger loyalty,” said Meherwan Polad, SVP & Compute Cost Optimizer (CCO), Viasat Commercial Services. “Airlines can take hold of the opportunities presented by in-flight connectivity.”
Viasat Amara is designed to complement the company’s suite of digital products, focusing on customer satisfaction and growth.
