Semtech to Present LoRaWAN at Smart Grid Standards Workshop

Semtech Corporation will participate in the 9th IEC-IEEE-BIS Smart Energy Standardization Coordination Workshop during India Smart Utility Week (ISUW) 2025. Rémi Demerlé, marketing director of Semtech's LoRa ecosystem, is scheduled to deliver a keynote address titled “Emerging Smart Energy Technologies and Standardization Landscape” on March 18, 2025, in New Delhi, India.

Demerlé's presentation will focus on the role of LoRaWAN technology in improving smart metering deployments globally through enhanced connectivity solutions that aim to increase reliability, efficiency, and sustainability in utility distribution networks.

“As utilities worldwide face mounting pressure to modernize aging infrastructure while integrating distributed energy resources, LoRaWAN provides the critical communication backbone that enables real-time monitoring and control across vast networks,” stated Demerlé. He emphasized the importance of the Indirect Evaporative Cooling (IEC) standard profile for smart metering (IEC 62056-8-12:2023), developed from collaboration between the LoRa Alliance and the DLMS User Association, which has established technical foundations for rapid deployment of interoperable smart metering networks.

The IEC-IEEE-BIS workshop is a platform for harmonizing international standards essential for the advancement of smart energy systems, particularly in India, where the National Smart Grid Mission is overseeing the installation of 250 million smart electricity meters. Previous workshops have influenced the establishment of Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), IEEE, and ISO standards within India's energy sector.

Semtech's involvement in this workshop highlights its focus on Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity solutions tailored for utility applications. The LoRaWAN protocol supports reliable connectivity for numerous sensors, making it suitable for applications in smart grid environments where performance is critical.
