Netdata

Netdata is an open-source, distributed, real-time infrastructure observability and monitoring platform (observability) for systems, containers, applications, and databases across on-premises (on-prem) and cloud environments.

  • Real-time infrastructure and application monitoring with per-second metrics collection and visualization (observability).
  • Distributed, agent-based architecture for monitoring Linux, containers, Kubernetes nodes, and other infrastructure components.
  • Cloud-hosted console for centralized views, alerting, and collaboration across multiple Netdata agents (observability/SaaS).
  • Built-in health monitoring and alerting with opinionated thresholds and anomaly detection on collected metrics.
  • Scales from single-node deployments to multi-node, multi-site environments with long-term metrics retention options.

More About Netdata

Netdata provides a monitoring and Observability Platform (OP) (observability) focused on high-resolution, per-second metrics for servers, containers, databases, and applications. It is used in enterprise environments to track resource usage and performance across heterogeneous infrastructure, including bare-metal systems, virtual machines, containers, and Kubernetes clusters. Organizations deploy Netdata agents on individual nodes and use a cloud console or web dashboards to inspect telemetry, detect anomalies, and troubleshoot performance issues across distributed systems.

The platform uses an agent-based architecture, where lightweight agents run close to the monitored workloads. These agents collect metrics from system components such as Central Processing Unit (CPU), memory, disks, filesystems, networks, and common services, as well as from containers and orchestrated environments. Metrics are stored locally with time-series structures and exposed through interactive dashboards with charts that update in near real time. This architecture supports scenarios where detailed performance visibility at the node level is required, including capacity planning, Root Cause Analysis (RCA), and production troubleshooting in enterprise operations teams.

Netdata also provides a cloud-hosted console (observability/SaaS) that connects to multiple agents and offers centralized inventory, multi-node views, alert management, and team collaboration features. Through this console, enterprise users group nodes by roles or environments, apply standardized alert configurations, and view composite dashboards that aggregate metrics from many systems. This design aligns Netdata with the broader observability category, alongside tools that collect metrics, logs, and traces, though Netdata focuses primarily on metrics and health monitoring at high granularity.

The software incorporates built-in health checks and alerting logic that operate on collected metrics. Users can adjust alert rules, thresholds, and notification channels based on operational requirements. Netdata also supports anomaly detection capabilities that analyze metric behavior over time to identify deviations from learned baselines. These functions enable operations, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), and DevOps teams to detect emerging performance issues and investigate them using the same per-second historical data from which alerts are triggered.

From a technology perspective, Netdata uses a web-based dashboard served by the agent, accessible through modern web browsers, and supports secure remote access patterns when used with the cloud service. The agents integrate with various system interfaces, exporters, and collectors to ingest metrics using established protocols and APIs where available. In marketplace and directory taxonomies, Netdata fits into infrastructure monitoring and observability (observability), with solution areas that include server monitoring, container and Kubernetes node monitoring, real-time performance analytics, and operational alerting for enterprise IT and cloud-native environments.
