Digital Realty Plans Milan Data Center Campus After Land Deals
Digital Realty disclosed plans to expand its footprint into Milan, Italy, following its existing buildout work in Rome. The move centers on new data center and interconnection capacity, with land already acquired for a planned campus.
In Milan, the company placed the campus in Abbiategrasso, southwest of the city center, as part of its broader presence across Southern Europe. Digital Realty said it also was constructing its first Rome facility, ROM1, which it expects to become operational in early 2027.
For Milan, Digital Realty said it acquired two parcels of land located about one kilometer apart. The campus is intended to sit on the southwest subsea traffic corridor that connects Milan to Genoa and Savona, and the company said the site would provide access to dense, diverse terrestrial fiber routes across the region.
Digital Realty said the Milan development would begin with an 8-megawatt facility focused on retail colocation and interconnection requirements, with first phase readiness targeted for 2028. It also said further expansion on the larger plot would enable up to 84 megawatts of capacity. “We’re excited to enter Milan, Italy’s business capital with a dynamic tech ecosystem,” said Paula Cogan, Managing Director, EMEA, Digital Realty. “By expanding into Milan, we are providing much-needed infrastructure to support the city’s growth as a digital hub, fostering new content, interconnection, and cloud communities while assuring long-term capacity for AI and hyperscale deployments.”
