Nokia secures 5G contract with Telecom Italia
Nokia has secured a three-year contract with Telecom Italia (TIM) to enhance its 5G network, following a competitive tender process. This partnership aims to expand coverage and capacity, particularly in smaller towns and rural areas, to further digitize enterprises and address the digital divide across Italy.
The deployment will utilize Nokia's AI-ready AirScale Radio Access Network (RAN) portfolio. Key components will include the Habrok 32 Massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) radios and the Pandion portfolio of FDD multi-band remote radio heads, which aim to provide comprehensive coverage in diverse scenarios.
Nokia's approach emphasizes energy efficiency. The inclusion of its ReefShark System-on-Chip technology in the latest baseband solutions, including the Lodos capacity card, is intended to enhance scalability while reducing energy consumption. In addition, the expansion of the MantaRay self-organizing network solution aims to improve network optimization and user experience.
Pietro Labriola, CEO of TIM, stated, “This partnership strengthens TIM’s leadership in building the next generation of 5G networks, enabling faster, smarter, and more sustainable connectivity across Italy.” Justin Hotard, President and CEO of Nokia, added, “Our expanded partnership with Telecom Italia shows how a trusted 5G network can unlock Italy’s next phase of digital transformation. Together, we’re connecting intelligence and strengthening Italy’s competitiveness.”
