Microchip Technology introduces Optical Ethernet PHY transceivers supporting up to 25 Gbps with PTP and MACsec.

Microchip Technology introduced a new series of Optical Ethernet PHY transceivers, offering speeds of up to 25 Gbps. This product line addresses the growing demand for reliable networking solutions capable of operating over long distances in challenging environments, spurred by the rise of smart factories and connected infrastructure.

These transceivers support link lengths of up to 10 kilometers over Single-Mode Fiber (SMF), amending traditional copper-based Ethernet solutions with enhanced security and scalability. They integrate IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol (PTP) for sub-nanosecond synchronization accuracy, crucial for time-sensitive applications in industrial automation and telecommunications.

Charlie Forni, corporate vice president of Microchip’s networking and connectivity solutions business, stated, “Design engineers are looking for solutions that simplify complex networking systems; adding PTP or MACsec could mean a complete overhaul of an existing design, our solution helps preserve our customers’ core-processing investment.” The units also support Media Access Control Security (MACsec) encryption to protect data integrity against various cyberthreats.

The Optical Ethernet PHY transceivers feature Ethernet speeds from 1 Gbps to 25 Gbps, catering to data centers and industrial applications. The series includes dual-port and quad-port options, allowing designers to scale their networks with flexible media types, including both optical andDirect Attach Copper (Discretionary Access Control (DAC)).

Microchip's portfolio of Ethernet products also encompasses a broad range of transceivers and high port-count switches designed for demanding applications across industrial and automotive sectors. These products are available for immediate production orders.
