Huawei holds sixth Innovation and IP Forum, presents Top Inventions awards

Huawei conducted its sixth Innovation and Intellectual Property (IP) Forum on November 11, 2025, where it revealed the recipients of its biannual Top Ten Inventions award. The event gathered global experts to discuss the crucial role of open innovation and IP protection in fostering technological advancement and societal development.

Liuping Song, Huawei's Chief Legal Officer, emphasized the company's commitment to open innovation, stating, “Open innovation drives society and technology forward, and it's in our DNA. We are committed to an open approach to innovation.” In 2024, Huawei reported approximately US$630 million in patent licensing revenue, significantly outpacing its patent royalty payments over the years.

Marco Alemán, Assistant Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), commented on Huawei's extensive engagement with WIPO's Global IP Services, noting that the company had 6,600 published Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) applications in 2024, maintaining its position as the leading user of the PCT system since 2014.

At the forum, Huawei showcased award-winning inventions that Switched Port Analyzer (SPAN) various domains such as computing, the HarmonyOS Operating System (OS), and storage technologies. Alan Fan, Vice President at Huawei, stated that the company shares its technological contributions through open-source software, patent filings, and academic publications.

In a notable milestone, Huawei published 37,000 patents in 2024, and produced over 10,000 technical contributions to standards organizations. Additionally, over 2.7 billion 5G devices and 1.2 billion consumer electronics have been licensed under Huawei’s patents.

Heiwai Tang, Associate Vice-President of the University of Hong Kong, addressed the importance of a robust patent system, applauding Huawei for adhering to international IP norms. As part of its open innovation strategy, Huawei introduced major updates to the Chaspark Patent site, enhancing it with features like semantic search and integration with Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Huawei aims to facilitate access to patent information through the Chaspark Patent site, which is designed to support students and smaller organizations that often face barriers in accessing such resources. The forum featured discussions from notable industry leaders sharing insights on fostering collaboration in open innovation.

Concluding the event, Song reiterated Huawei's commitment to protecting innovation and IP, asserting the need to work with industry partners to enable collective growth and development.
