Nokia launches high-capacity shelves, projects 5G growth - September 2025

Recent data indicates that private wireless networks are witnessing growth, contrasting with the stable trends in the public Radio Access Network (RAN) sector. The Private Wireless report reveals that a 40% revenue increase projected for 2024 is persisting into the first half of 2025, with private wireless RAN revenues growing considerably.

Private wireless networks are expected to expand approximately 20% for the entirety of 2025. This growth is notable against the static public RAN landscape, where total revenues are predicted to remain flat this year. Estimates show that private RAN constituted a mid-single-digit percentage of overall RAN revenues in the first half of 2025, a rise from a low single-digit share in 2022.

The ecosystem around private wireless continues to develop, involving over 50 private RAN and 5G core vendors. Despite this growth, market concentration persists with five leading public RAN vendors holding substantial influence in the private RAN segment. The recent report highlighted growth drivers in the market, particularly in campus and wide-area deployments, with the latter generating a larger share of revenue.

Nokia has launched high-capacity shelves for the 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) to address rising bandwidth demands. The newly introduced shelves provide three times higher density and reduce power consumption per bit by up to 60%. They enable seamless integration with existing 1830 PSS systems and support advanced coherent optical engines.

The shelves are anticipated to help operators respond swiftly to heightened customer demand, with commercial availability expected in Q2 2026 and trials set to commence in late 2025. This development emphasizes Nokia's role in addressing network capacity issues.

Nokia’s Mobile Broadband Index Report 2025 projects significant 5G growth in the Middle East and Africa by 2030, with expected subscriptions reaching 605 million, accounting for 25% of all mobile connections. Investment initiatives are accelerating the deployment of 5G technology, particularly in the Gulf Cooperation Council region, where 91% of subscriptions are estimated to be on 5G.

The report further indicates that Fixed Wireless Access (Fixed-Wireless Access (FWA)) is projected to see its market share rise from 15% in 2023 to 35% by 2030. This shift underscores a trend towards enhancing internet service provision by leveraging robust 5G infrastructure.
