Huawei holds sixth Innovation and IP Forum, announces Top Ten Inventions

Huawei held its sixth Innovation and Intellectual Property (IP) Forum on November 11, 2025, where it announced the winners of its biannual “Top Ten Inventions” award. The forum brought together experts in innovation and IP to discuss the impact of openness and IP protection in fostering innovation and social progress.

During the event, Liuping Song, Chief Legal Officer at Huawei, spoke on the importance of open innovation, stating, “Open innovation drives society and technology forward, and it's in our DNA. We are committed to an open approach to innovation.” Huawei disclosed that its patent licensing revenue reached approximately US$630 million in 2024, with royalties paid significantly exceeding those received.

Marco Alemán, Assistant Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), recognized Huawei as a key user of WIPO's Global IP Services, noting the company's position as a top participant in the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) system since 2014. In 2024 alone, Huawei published 6,600 PCT applications.

At the forum, Huawei revealed its latest Top Ten Inventions, which Switched Port Analyzer (SPAN) various vital business sectors, including computing and storage. Alan Fan, Vice President and Head of the Intellectual Property Rights Department, highlighted Huawei's contributions to the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector through open-source software and patent filings.

By the end of 2024, Huawei's patents licensed over 2.7 billion 5G devices and approximately 1.2 billion Wi-Fi devices. Song mentioned that 48 Fortune Global 500 companies are now Huawei licensees.

In a move to support open innovation and research, Huawei launched the Chaspark Patent site in June 2024, providing free patent search features, including new AI-driven capabilities. Other speakers at the forum shared their insights on open innovation, emphasizing collaboration and the value of a strong patent system.

Closing the forum, Song stated, “We are committed to building an environment that protects innovation and IP, and work closely with industry partners to promote constructive IP protection.” This statement underscores Huawei's ongoing objectives in fostering a productive ecosystem for IP and innovation.
