Ericsson Mobility Report details growth in differentiated connectivity services
In November 2025, the latest Ericsson Mobility Report indicated that 33 communications service providers (CSPs) now offer commercial differentiated connectivity services utilizing 5G Standalone (SA) network slicing. This development reflects an increase to a total of 65 5G SA-based service offerings. As part of this expansion, CSPs guarantee Quality of Service (QoS) for specific customer use cases through network slicing.
The report included a new forecast predicting that global 5G subscriptions will reach 6.4 billion by the end of 2031, accounting for approximately two-thirds of all mobile subscriptions at that time. In addition, the report noted that 1.4 billion people are expected to gain access to Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) broadband, with 90 percent of those connections utilizing 5G technology.
According to the report, the number of CSPs deploying 5G SA networks has increased to over 90, representing a growth of around 30 providers since the previous year. Among the identified cases, 21 new commercial offerings were launched in 2025. This trend illustrates the ongoing interest of CSPs in leveraging 5G SA for differentiated service models beyond traditional data plans, emphasizing value-added services.
The Ericsson Mobility Report projects that by the end of 2025, mobile data traffic will have risen by 20 percent year-on-year, driven primarily by markets in China and India. The share of mobile data traffic managed by 5G networks is expected to reach 43 percent at the close of 2025, rising to 83 percent by 2031. This data illustrates the growing reliance on 5G infrastructure in handling data demands.
As Fixed-Wireless Access (FWA) services gain traction, interest in dynamic pricing models for broadband services is increasing. The report notes that 65 percent of FWA providers now offer these speed-based tariffs, reflecting a shift in monetization strategies in the fixed broadband landscape.
