GÉANT operates the pan-European data network for research and education, interconnecting national research and education networks (NRENs) and providing high-capacity connectivity between universities, research institutes, and related organizations. Its core role is to supply a dedicated backbone infrastructure (network infrastructure) with multi-domain optical and IP services that support data-intensive science, international collaboration, and enterprise-scale academic workloads.

The organization’s services are used in institutional environments where predictable performance, security, and policy alignment with the public research sector are required. Typical deployments involve NRENs connecting campus networks to the GÉANT backbone through high-bandwidth links, often using technologies such as MPLS-based IP routing, Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) optical transport, and IPv4/IPv6 dual-stack support.
