GÉANT

GÉANT is a pan-European research and education networking organization that designs, operates, and coordinates high-capacity network and trust services for national research and education networks and their connected institutions.

  • Pan-European backbone network services for research and education institutions (network infrastructure)
  • Federated identity, authentication, and access management solutions for academic and research communities (identity and access management)
  • Security, trust, and certificate services supporting cross-border collaboration (security and trust services)
  • Cloud connectivity and brokerage frameworks in cooperation with national research and education networks (cloud connectivity and brokerage)
  • Collaboration, community support, and project coordination across European and global research and education networking initiatives (community and project coordination)

More About GÉANT

GÉANT operates the pan-European data network for research and education, interconnecting national research and education networks (NRENs) and providing high-capacity connectivity between universities, research institutes, and related organizations. Its core role is to supply a dedicated backbone infrastructure (network infrastructure) with multi-domain optical and IP services that support data-intensive science, international collaboration, and enterprise-scale academic workloads.

The organization’s services are used in institutional environments where predictable performance, security, and policy alignment with the public research sector are required. Typical deployments involve NRENs connecting campus networks to the GÉANT backbone through high-bandwidth links, often using technologies such as MPLS-based IP routing, Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) optical transport, and IPv4/IPv6 dual-stack support. This architecture establishes a federated, multi-layer network model in which GÉANT functions as the continental backbone segment.

Beyond pure connectivity, GÉANT provides identity and access management (IAM) services (identity and access management) that enable federated authentication across borders and institutions. These services are designed to allow researchers, students, and staff to use institutional credentials to access distributed services, research infrastructures, and cloud platforms. The Identity Access Management (IAM) stack commonly incorporates SAML-based federations, eduGAIN-style inter-federation frameworks, and related protocols for Single Sign-On (SSO) and attribute exchange.

Security and trust services (security and trust services) are another core area, including certificate and Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) offerings that enable secure communication, service authentication, and compliance with community policies. These capabilities support both network operations and user-facing services, enabling secure access to collaboration platforms, scientific instruments, and data repositories spanning multiple jurisdictions.

GÉANT also works with NRENs and commercial providers to deliver cloud connectivity, brokerage, and related advisory services (cloud connectivity and brokerage). These activities focus on connecting academic and research institutions to public and community cloud resources over managed, high-performance links, often with attention to data protection, cost management, and integration with existing campus and NREN infrastructures.

In addition, GÉANT coordinates and participates in multi-country projects funded by European programs, focusing on network evolution, service development, and alignment of policies across the research and education networking community (community and project coordination). Through these activities, the organization occupies a directory position that spans several categories: wide area networking for research and education, federated identity and access management, security and trust frameworks, and cloud connectivity for public-sector and academic users.
