China Mobile International and global partners complete 2Africa submarine cable

China Mobile International Limited (CMI) and seven partners, including Bayobab, center3, Meta, Orange, Telecom Egypt, Vodafone Group, and WIOCC, completed the core infrastructure for the 2Africa Submarine Cable. This cable, which encircles the African continent and connects to various intercontinental nodes, aims to enhance international digital connectivity and support economic development in Africa and adjoining regions.

The 2Africa cable, spanning over 45,000 kilometers, links over 33 countries across Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, with a design capacity of 180Tbps. Analysts estimate that it could increase Africa's GDP by up to USD36.9 billion within the first few years of operation.

Following the completion of its key segments, Continuous Model Integration (CMI) optimized resource use along Africa's coasts and Europe, while leveraging existing submarine cable systems like PEACE and Equiano. This expansion will enhance CMI's network throughout Africa, improving connectivity and bandwidth availability for various services.

CMI intends to utilize the capabilities provided by the 2Africa cable to strengthen its existing cloud-network services, bolstering its infrastructure by integrating over 100 submarine and terrestrial cables and more than 1,270 data centers globally. This positioning enables the company to deliver diverse services, including dedicated international and cloud private lines to clients throughout Africa.

Since entering the African market in 2015, CMI's infrastructure development has been aimed at facilitating reliable connectivity across education, healthcare, and finance, thus supporting Africa's broader digital transformation.

Looking to the future, CMI plans to continue capitalizing on submarine cables like 2Africa to further support the digital economy in Africa, delivering intelligent solutions that align with emerging information infrastructure needs.
