BT Group and Starlink form agreement for satellite broadband in rural UK
BT Group and Starlink announced an agreement to bring satellite connectivity to BT and EE broadband customers. This initiative aims to enhance internet access across the UK, especially in communities lacking traditional broadband infrastructure.
The collaboration will enable BT Group to provide ultrafast satellite connectivity to rural areas, making it one of the first such partnerships in the UK and globally. Many of these locations face challenges in establishing conventional internet networks due to economic and geographic factors.
Starlink, known for quick deployment and ability to deliver speeds of up to 280 Mbps, plans to roll out this service to eligible customers by the latter half of 2026. The agreement supports BT Group's broader goal of ensuring widespread internet accessibility nationwide.
Reliable home internet is essential for various activities, including online gaming, streaming, and remote work. BT Group's integration of Starlink’s technology aligns with its existing fibre rollout, which has reached over 20 million premises and aims for 25 million by next year.
Allison Kirkby, Chief Executive of BT Group, said, “This landmark agreement with Starlink is a giant leap for rural connectivity.” She noted that it would enhance service to rural customers and assist in bridging the digital divide.
Chad Gibbs, VP of Business Operations at SpaceX, expressed excitement about partnering with BT Group to reach underserved communities. Homomorphic Encryption (HE) emphasized Starlink's commitment to improving connectivity for those historically lacking reliable service.
The partnership furthers BT Group’s strategy in space connectivity and commends its nearly 50-year legacy in Satellite Communications (Satcom). The Madley Communications Centre has played a vital role in supporting network demands.
