Beacon Broadband launches digital literacy program for seniors pairing them with local students in Oregon
Beacon Broadband, a subsidiary of Coos-Curry Electric Cooperative, has launched a six-week digital literacy class aimed at senior citizens in Oregon. This initiative, part of the “Connected Senior” program developed in collaboration with Calix University, pairs seniors with high school student instructors to teach essential online skills, such as navigating the internet securely, using telehealth services, and understanding cybersecurity practices. The program addresses the digital divide for seniors, especially in Curry County, where 38 percent of residents are over age 65. The curriculum begins with basic computer skills and progresses to topics like phishing protection. Feedback from participants indicates that seniors find the classes valuable, and students gain satisfaction from contributing to their community. John Durocher, chief customer officer at Calix, emphasized the importance of such initiatives in preparing students for career opportunities in the broadband industry. As demand for skilled workers in the field grows, programs like the “Connected Senior” can help bridge the talent gap while enhancing the digital capabilities of older generations. Calix continues to support these efforts by equipping instructors and students with educational resources.
