STMicroelectronics and SP Group launch Singapore's largest district cooling system

STMicroelectronics and SP Group commenced operations for Singapore’s largest industrial district cooling system at the Ang Mo Kio TechnoPark. This initiative is designed to enhance the environmental performance of STMicroelectronics’ semiconductor manufacturing operations, aligning with the company’s decarbonization strategy.

The district cooling system aims to reduce carbon emissions by up to 120,000 tonnes annually and is expected to decrease cooling-related electricity costs by 20%. It will also repurpose over half a million cubic meters of water each year, utilizing water previously used in cooling towers.

This represents the first application of district cooling at a manufacturing facility for STMicroelectronics. The installation underscores the company’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2027. Rajita D’Souza, President of Human Resources and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) at STMicroelectronics, emphasized the importance of this project in furthering sustainability objectives.

The system, with an installed capacity of 36,000 refrigeration tonnes, features a centralized closed-loop network that delivers chilled water and replaces individual chillers. This design allows for more efficient cooling and reduces energy demands.

SP Group's Chief Executive Officer, Stanley Huang, highlighted that the collaboration marks a key step in Singapore’s transition towards a low-carbon future. The installation has already achieved over 2 million accident-free man hours, reflecting a robust safety commitment.

In addition to the Ang Mo Kio installation, STMicroelectronics and SP Group are also working on upgrading the cooling system at ST's Test Outcome Analyzer (TOA) Payoh site. This partnership aims to enhance energy efficiency further and reduce an additional 2,140 tonnes of carbon emissions annually, following a 20-year service agreement.
