ABI Research Finds Latin America Overtakes Europe in Ride-Hailing
Application Binary Interface (ABI) Research reported that more than 13 billion ride-hailing trips occurred in the first half of 2025, with Asia-Pacific accounting for 57.5% of global trips. The same report said Latin America overtook Europe to become the third-largest region after North America.
The distribution of completed trips varied by region, according to ABI Research. The report stated that China and India together accounted for nearly 80% of the Asia-Pacific market, and that Indonesia and Vietnam represented a combined 11% of the market.
In China, ABI Research said Didi held 77% of the market in the first half of 2025. In the United States, Uber held 75% of the market during the same period. ABI Research also described markets with shifting shares, including Indonesia, where Grab and Gojek accounted for 89% of overall trip volumes in the first half of 2025; Grab’s share of Gross Merchandise Value was 50.1% versus Gojek’s 41.5%.
ABI Research said Vietnam’s market leader Grab accounted for 62% of GMV, while GreenSM, part of the Vingroup ecosystem, captured over 25% of the market with an all-electric fleet. “A combination of a highly urbanized population, an abundance of two-wheel vehicles, and strong consumer engagement with digital platforms makes Asia-Pacific the dominant region for ride-hailing,” said James Hodgson. “Many of these factors increasingly apply in Latin America, driving this region to near parity with North America in terms of completed trips.” Hodgson also said, “With momentum finally growing behind the long-dormant driverless vehicle market, it is more important than ever for autonomous vehicle technology developers to identify and partner with the leading players in demand generation for shared mobility, which are today’s ride-hailing giants,” said Hodgson.
