OpenAI partners with G42 to build AI data center in Abu Dhabi

OpenAI has entered a partnership with G42 to construct a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) data center in Abu Dhabi, marking its first project outside the United States. This facility is expected to have a capacity of 1 gigawatt, which will position it among the largest data centers globally. Financial specifics, however, remain undisclosed.

Project Overview

The venture, referred to as Stargate UAE, is part of the UAE's broader strategy to enhance its support for AI infrastructure and services. Under the oversight of Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed al Nahyan, G42 is leading this initiative, which includes providing a cost-free version of ChatGPT to local residents as a key offering.

Timeline and Collaborations

The first phase of the project, which will provide 200 megawatts of capacity, aims for completion by the end of 2026. G42 will finance the construction process, while OpenAI will collaborate with Oracle on operations. Additionally, NVIDIA and Cisco are involved as technological partners, further enriching the project's capabilities. This development follows earlier agreements between the UAE and the United States to enhance AI capacities through improved access to AI chip technologies.

This summary reflects a timely overview of OpenAI's partnership with G42 regarding the Abu Dhabi data center and its implications for AI infrastructure in the region.
