Nokia deploys private 5G network for Memphis Light, Gas and Water's grid modernization initiative

Nokia confirmed its selection by Memphis Light, Gas and Water (MLGW) to deploy a private 5G wireless network. This initiative supports MLGW’s grid modernization strategy in Memphis and Shelby County, Tennessee. The network aims to enhance power distribution and reduce unplanned outages for the utility's more than 420,000 customers.

As the first municipal utility in the U.S. to implement a full-scale standalone (SA) 5G network, MLGW aims to unify communications across its electric, gas, and water services. This solution provides high-performance connectivity for critical applications while enhancing operational efficiency and resilience.

MLGW President and CEO Doug McGowen stated, “The 5G Network Deployment is a foundational aspect of MLGW’s Grid Modernization Initiative.” The network will facilitate automation and support future technologies such as electric vehicles and battery storage.

Nokia’s technology will enable secure interoperability with existing infrastructure and modern Internet of Things (IoT) devices. It will support critical operations, including automated meter reading, grid monitoring, and fault detection.

Jeff Pittman, Head of North America Enterprise, Mobile Networks at Nokia, indicated that this collaboration is pivotal for MLGW in advancing power grid modernization. Nokia will deliver its AirScale radio access equipment and 5G Core Enterprise Solution, along with cybersecurity products designed for proactive threat management.
