Netskope approaches 300 patents, spotlight on SaaS forensics

Netskope is approaching the milestone of 300 patents. James Robinson, the Chief Information Security (infosec) Officer, provided insights into a recent patent related to Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) forensics and the role of patents in the company's operations.

Patent Overview

Robinson noted that while the Research and Development (R&D) (R7D) team typically secures patents, contributions from the cybersecurity team are significant, particularly through the Customer Zero program. This initiative involves close collaboration between the Global infosec team and R&D, focusing on real-world challenges to align product development with customer needs.

Latest Patent Details

The newest patent pertains to a system for conducting SaaS forensics within the Netskope platform. Robinson emphasized that SaaS forensics is less developed compared to Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) or traditional servers, creating a need for tools that enhance visibility into SaaS applications within an organization’s security landscape.

Challenges Addressed

The patent originated from inquiries by the Global infosec team regarding incident handling for SaaS applications. As a result of tabletop exercises, the necessity for a support system for SaaS forensics was identified, culminating in the successful patent application. This highlights the security team's proactive role in addressing practical issues.

Importance of Patents

Robinson stated that patents acquired by the Global infosec team play a crucial role in shaping Netskope's product offerings. This ensures that the functionality developed addresses the real challenges security teams face. By adopting the Customer Zero role, the team can tailor solutions to better meet customer needs.

This summary illustrates Netskope's strategy of utilizing patents as foundational elements of its cybersecurity offerings and emphasizes the connection between product development and actual security challenges.
