NASA continues crowdsourcing with new NOIS contract
NASA announced a partnership with global communities through the awarding of 25 new NASA Open Innovation Service (NOIS) contracts aimed at addressing challenges in space exploration. Managed by NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, these contracts focus on leveraging crowdsourcing as a means to engage the public in finding solutions.
The NOIS program, part of NASA's Center of Excellence for Collaborative Innovation, focuses on public engagement through methodologies like prize competitions and freelance tasking. This approach aims to consolidate innovative ideas and capture diverse perspectives to solve complex space challenges efficiently.
The third iteration of the NOIS contract, known as NOIS3, has a total value of $475 million spanning ten years, with a guaranteed minimum obligation of $500 per contract award. The contract's base period runs from June 5, 2025, to May 31, 2027, with options to extend work through 2035. This strategic allocation allows for experimentation with various crowdsourcing tools to enhance collaboration.
A comprehensive list of awardees includes companies such as Blue Clarity from Virginia, Challenge Works from the UK, and Freelancer International from Australia, among others. The initiative exemplifies NASA's commitment to utilizing open innovation to meet evolving space exploration needs.
NASA's CoECI supports these open innovation efforts by defining challenges, formulating solutions, and facilitating experimentation across agencies, promoting a culture of collaboration and problem-solving.
