Google Cloud plans TalayLink subsea cable and connectivity hubs in Australia and Thailand

Google Cloud detailed plans to develop a new subsea cable system named TalayLink, intended to link Australia with Thailand. This undertaking aligns with Google’s Australia Connect project, aimed at broadening the company’s infrastructure network in the Indo-Pacific region. No specific timeline for completion has been provided.

The initiative targets the creation of a more resilient network backbone by establishing an alternative, low-latency route to Thailand across the Indian Ocean, intentionally avoiding congested areas west of the Sunda Strait. This development is expected to improve integration with Google’s emerging data centers and Cloud Region in Thailand.

TalayLink will incorporate two connectivity hubs: one in Mandurah, Western Australia, offering network diversity as an alternative to existing Perth landing points; the other in South Thailand, a critical submarine cable junction, developed in partnership with Artificial Intelligence Security (AIS) and International Gateway Company (IGC) under ALT Telecom. These hubs are designed to support cable switching, caching, and colocation functions to enhance network resilience and scale for increased cloud and Artificial Intelligence (AI) workloads.

Narit Therdsteerasukdi, Secretary General of the Thailand Board of Investment, said, “The TalayLink cable will serve as a pivotal piece of digital infrastructure, enhancing Thailand’s connectivity and resilience. Together with Google’s upcoming Google Cloud region and data center in Thailand, these forward‑looking investments will significantly expand regional network and computing capacity, while firmly positioning Thailand as a critical digital gateway for next‑generation cloud and AI innovation in Southeast Asia.”

Pratthana Leelapanang, CEO of AIS, stated, “AIS is excited to be extending our relationship with Google as a strategic partner by supporting the connectivity hub in Southern Thailand. The combination of Google’s new, diverse submarine cable path and AIS’s high-reliability colocation capabilities will ensure the digital infrastructure in the region is capable of supporting the country’s AI strategy.” Preeyaporn Tangpaosak, President of ALT Telecom, added, “International Gateway Company (IGC), a subsidiary of ALT Telecom PLC, is delighted to be a key Google partner in landing a new submarine cable in Thailand. IGC brings to the project its extensive experience operating a nationwide network and international cable gateway. This cable is an important new piece of digital infrastructure that will accelerate Thailand’s ambitious digital economy development strategy.”

Upon completion, TalayLink and the connectivity hubs in Mandurah and South Thailand will contribute to network robustness across Australia, Africa, and Southeast Asia. Combined with previously announced hubs in the Maldives and Christmas Island, these elements form part of a broader infrastructure framework extending connectivity across the Indian Ocean toward the Middle East.
