FledgePOWER

FledgePOWER is an open-source software framework for secure, interoperable power grid data exchange and protocol translation between Operational technology (OT) and IT systems (grid integration / data integration).

  • Protocol translation and data gateway for power systems communication (grid data integration).
  • Support for standard utility and smart grid protocols to bridge OT and IT environments (power grid interoperability).
  • Modular architecture for deploying protocol adapters and connectors at the edge or in substation contexts (edge computing / substation automation).
  • Integration with LF Energy and related projects for coordinated grid-edge and data management use cases (open energy ecosystem).
  • Focus on secure, reliable exchange of grid telemetry and control data across heterogeneous systems (power systems data exchange).

More About FledgePOWER

FledgePOWER is an LF Energy project focused on secure, interoperable data exchange for electric power systems (grid integration). It addresses the problem of heterogeneous protocols and legacy OT in transmission, distribution, and substation environments, where operators need to connect field devices, control systems, and enterprise applications without replacing existing infrastructure. By providing a protocol translation and data gateway layer, FledgePOWER enables utilities and energy stakeholders to integrate grid data into modern IT platforms while continuing to use established operational protocols.

The project centers on protocol conversion and data routing between OT and IT systems (data integration). It targets commonly used utility and smart grid protocols so that telemetry, status, and control messages from devices and substations can be mapped into formats consumable by higher-level applications, data platforms, and analytics. This function supports use cases such as grid monitoring, asset management, Distributed Energy Resource (DER) coordination, and automation of grid operations where multiple vendors and systems coexist.

FledgePOWER uses a modular and extensible architecture (software framework). Protocol adapters and connectors can be deployed as components that handle specific communication standards at the edge, including substation gateways, control centers, or regional data hubs. This design allows utilities and system integrators to assemble deployments that match their infrastructure, adding or updating adapters as protocol needs evolve. The framework aligns with LF Energy’s broader portfolio around digital substations, data platforms, and grid orchestration, encouraging reuse of components and architectural patterns.

In enterprise and institutional environments, FledgePOWER can operate as a mediation layer between Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), substation automation systems, field devices, and central IT platforms (enterprise integration). Utilities can use it to standardize upstream data flows into enterprise buses, data lakes, or Application Programming Interface (API) layers while maintaining protocol-appropriate communication on the OT side. The project’s emphasis on secure communication and controlled access supports integration in regulated energy environments where cyber security and operational continuity are priorities.

FledgePOWER fits into technical categories such as grid data integration, substation gateway software, and OT/IT interoperability frameworks. It is part of the LF Energy open-source ecosystem, which focuses on collaborative tooling for power systems digitalization. For practitioners, it provides a framework to reduce custom protocol bridging, unify access to grid data across mixed-vendor environments, and support deployment of modern analytics, automation, and control applications on top of existing infrastructure.
