Broadcom Updates VMware vDefend and Avi Load Balancer for VMware Cloud Foundation

Broadcom Inc. described updates to VMware vDefend and VMware Avi Load Balancer intended for private clouds built on VMware Cloud Foundation. The company said the changes expand layered security functions while adding tools designed to streamline operations for teams running application infrastructure.

The release tied the updates to a need for workload protections that address private cloud application and data. Broadcom positioned the enhancements around lateral security, API protection, and performance and deployment changes designed to reduce infrastructure cost pressure and simplify administration.

For vDefend, Broadcom introduced an “1-2-3” workflow for Accelerated Advanced Threat Prevention (ATP) alongside Distributed Firewall (DFW), using workload-level visibility to highlight security posture, recommend rules, and guide workflows. The company also said on-premises malware prevention brings malware sandboxing within the local network and that vDefend supports air-gapped environments for offline threat intelligence updates. For Avi Load Balancer, Broadcom added native API protection for virtual machines, vSphere Kubernetes Services, and AI workloads, combining with Application Firewall and API Protection (WAAP) capabilities.

Broadcom also cited performance and operational changes, including a “2-node SSP” deployment model, vDefend throughput increases for DFW and distributed IDPS performance tied to distributed virtual patching, and Avi Load Balancer scale-out throughput gains. The company said both products include an AI Assistant, and that the vDefend and Avi Conversion Tool (vACT) enhancement automates migration from legacy, agent-based firewall solutions to DFW. Broadcom said the updates ship in vDefend SSP 5.2, vDefend 9.1.1, Avi Load Balancer 32.1.4, and vACT 3.0, with compatibility with the VCF 9.1 release.

“As AI-fueled cyberattacks and vulnerability exploits redefine the threat landscape, a fragmented security approach is no longer an option,” said Umesh Mahajan, vice president and general manager, Application Networking and Security Division, Broadcom. “With today’s updates to vDefend and Avi Load Balancer, we are giving enterprise customers the protection, performance, and automation they need to defend their application infrastructure at scale.”
