Broadcom updates VMware vDefend and Avi Load Balancer for VCF

Broadcom Inc. described updates to VMware vDefend and VMware Avi Load Balancer for VMware Cloud Foundation, focusing on multi-layer cybersecurity controls and operational changes for private cloud deployments. The company framed the update as a way to extend security coverage and support deployment needs for application infrastructure.

Broadcom said the enhancements expand private cloud security capabilities, optimize infrastructure costs, and use AI-powered automation to simplify operations. The company linked the work to the security requirements for private cloud workloads that it described as needing protection beyond perimeter or point defenses.

The vDefend updates included a security services platform model and changes to advanced threat prevention. Broadcom said vDefend offers an “1-2-3” workflow for ATP with Distributed Firewall, malware prevention with on-premises sandboxing of static and dynamic artifacts, and full support for vDefend capabilities in air-gapped environments. Broadcom also said it introduced API protection in Avi Load Balancer, including native API protection for virtual machines, vSphere Kubernetes Services, and AI workloads, alongside Web Application Firewall and API Protection capabilities.

Broadcom said the performance and deployment updates included a 2-node SSP model and throughput increases for distributed firewall and distributed IDPS performance, along with scale-out throughput for Avi Load Balancer. The company also described an AI assistant for vDefend DFW and Avi Load Balancer operations and an enhancement to the vDefend and Avi Conversion Tool to automate migration of legacy, agent-based firewall solutions to DFW. Broadcom said the updates were delivered in vDefend SSP 5.2, vDefend 9.1.1, Avi Load Balancer 32.1.4, and vACT 3.0 releases, compatible with the VCF 9.1 release.

“With today’s updates to vDefend and Avi Load Balancer, we are giving enterprise customers the protection, performance, and automation they need to defend their application infrastructure at scale,” said Umesh Mahajan, vice president and general manager, Application Networking and Security Division, Broadcom. “API protection has become paramount for securing our private cloud application and AI traffic” said Ahsan Khan, chief technology officer of ThinkOn. “With prescriptive ATP 1-2-3 workflows, enterprise customers can enable virtual patching and advanced threat detection comprehensively. What could have taken many months can now be rolled-out in a matter of a few weeks.” said Chris Steffen, VP of Research at EMA. “With prescriptive ATP 1-2-3 workflows in vDefend, we can efficiently implement virtual patching and advanced threat prevention in a matter of weeks, rather than many months.” said Nagaraj Reddi, VP of Technology at United States Senate Federal Credit Union.

Broadcom’s updates were presented as part of vDefend and Avi Load Balancer releases compatible with VCF 9.1.
