1.2 Million Healthcare Devices Exposed Online - Patient Records at Risk
Research conducted by European cybersecurity firm Modat uncovered over 1.2 million internet-connected healthcare devices exposed to data risks. The study, which utilized Modat Magnify’s scanning technology, revealed significant vulnerabilities in regions such as the United States and South Africa.
Among the devices assessed were MRI machines, blood test systems, and hospital management systems. The findings pointed to multiple factors contributing to these vulnerabilities, including weak passwords and inadequate security settings. In some instances, detected systems lacked basic authentication, allowing potential unauthorized access.
Specific instances included the exposure of sensitive patient information, with data such as medical histories and imaging results accessible through the open internet. Modat collaborated with Health-ISAC and Z-CERT to facilitate responsible disclosure practices to affected organizations. The report underscores the importance of cybersecurity in healthcare, asserting it is essential for patient safety.
Soufian El Yadmani, Modat CEO, expressed concerns about the prevalent lack of security measures in devices that are unnecessarily connected to the internet. As remote medical services grow, recommendations included regular security assessments and comprehensive monitoring of connected devices to mitigate risks effectively.
