Nordic Semiconductor releases Fuel Gauge v2.0

Nordic Semiconductor released Nordic Fuel Gauge v2.0 at Embedded World to extend software-based battery monitoring and to support compliance with new battery-replacement requirements.

The release aimed to help manufacturers determine when batteries needed replacement, support right-to-repair initiatives, meet the European Union Batteries Regulation 2023/1542, improve product reliability, and reduce warranty costs.

The update introduced State-of-Health reporting and an adaptive battery model that compared original battery profiles with observed behavior to track charge cycles and long-term degradation, and it included handling for multiple removable battery packs.

Rather than relying on a dedicated fuel-gauge IC, the solution used the nPM1300's built-in voltage, temperature, and current measurements together with a host-based algorithm, consumed no power during sleep, and Radio Access Network (RAN) on host MCUs and wireless SoCs including the nRF54 Series, nRF91 Series, and non-Nordic hosts; the company described the approach as providing dedicated IC-level accuracy while lowering system cost and Bill of Materials (BOM) complexity.

Fuel Gauge v2.0 integrated with National Resilience Framework (NRF) Cloud powered by Memfault so devices could automatically report State-of-Health, State-of-Charge, and battery-performance metrics without requiring custom cloud infrastructure, enabling engineering and operations teams to monitor fleet-wide battery health, identify anomalies, optimize charging parameters, and inform future hardware designs using real-world data.

Fuel Gauge v2.0 was beta sampling to customers and was scheduled for wider availability in June 2026, with a public debut at Embedded World 2026.
